“To my amazement, I watched as Sheriff Tomás Marés stepped out from behind the rock where he’d been taking cover and walked toward Jake, his pistol extended. Like Elfego by God Baca, he ignored the bloody fusillade of bullets and aimed at the madman. He fired three shots in rapid succession. I could see Jake’s body twitch as each one found its mark. The outlaw stood straight up and looked around, a slightly baffled expression on his face. He looked as if he wanted to say something but no words came out of his mouth. With his pistol pointing toward the sky, he pulled the trigger repeatedly. After two more shots, the hammer fell on empty chambers. He continued pulling the trigger for a moment more and then fell face down on the top of Black Mesa.” Tommy Stallings, The Big Empty, Five Star Publishing
